Press Release
Whatever you had planned to do on Thursday 9 July, if it didn’t involve coming to The Borderline, then cancel it…… This is the Number One rock’n’soul party of the year! The BellRays from East Los Angeles play a rare London show and unleash their maximum rock and soul revue driven by the remarkable powerhouse vocals of Lisa Kekaula (vocalist of choice from everyone from Basement Jaxx to The MC5). The BellRays are joined by the legendary Los Chicos from Spain who cause a riot every time they visit London with their intoxicating cocktail of blues, punk, soul, country and anything else they can get their hands on. Los Chicos high energy stage performance is quite unlike anything you will have ever seen before. If The BellRays and Los Chicos wasn’t enough opening proceedings will be the brilliant King Salami & The Cumberland 3 and the icing on this Rock’n’Soul party cake is a DJ set by The Corn Rocket Club DJs AKA Eric Ulcer and Victor Torpedo.
The BellRays
Blues is the teacher. Punk is the preacher. It’s all about emotion and energy, experience and raw talent, spirit and intellect. Exciting things happen when these things collide. Bob Vennum and Lisa Kekaula made the BellRays happen in 1991 in East LA but they weren’t really thinking about any of this then. They wanted to play music and they wanted it to feel good. They wanted people to WANT to get up, to NEED to get up and check out what was going on. Form an opinion. React. So they took everything they knew about; the Beatles, Stevie Wonder, the Who, the Ramones, Billie Holiday, Lou Rawls, Hank Williams, the DB’s, Jimmy Reed, Led Zeppelin, to name a very few and pressed it into service. It was never about coming up with a ‘sound’, or fitting in with a scene. It was about the energy that made all that music so irresistible. It was the history BEFORE Led Zeppelin that led them to that point. The Beatles thought they were playing R&B. It just came out like ‘Rubber Soul’. The Ramones were trying to be Del Shannon or Neil Sedaka and out came ‘Rocket to Russia’. With the BellRays there was no conscious effort to ‘combine’ rock and soul because they didn’t see them as divided in the first place. Blues was teaching. Punk was preaching. The BellRays were always listening.

Los Chicos live shows have become the stuff of legend. Drop the best black music, Blues, R&B and Soul, a shot of country, a little more garage, and a pinch of punk into a cocktail shaker - not forgetting to add a little cold beer and, hey presto, you got yourself Los Chicos. Los Chicos could make the dead dance with a hip shaking swinging rhythm section, two guitar players who don’t know whether they’re Wilko Johnson or Steve Cropper, a plain mad sax player, and basically the best frontman in Spain in the form of Rafa.

After having roamed around the globe separately, four freaks teamed up in London as King Salami & The Cumberland 3. They bring forth up-tempo party Stompin' Rhythm’n’Blues played according to the basic principles of the old London school of Trash. Their sound is crude like the guitar of Link Wray.
www.myspace.com/kingsalamiandthecumberland3Viernes 10 julio. Blast-off festival Nottingham.
Domingo 12 julio. Londres.
